Multi-Objective Decision-Making for an Island Microgrid in the Gulf of Maine

Microgrid implementation often lacks economic and environmental efficiencies due to sub-optimal configuration operation. The current study aims explore the optimal operational strategies for a microgrid system with maximum life cycle co-benefits. This was inspired by real optimization need Shoals Marine Laboratory, seasonal marine teaching research field station on Appledore Island, Maine. A dynamic model developed simulate operation, multi-criteria analysis performed based diesel electricity generation, equivalent annual costs, carbon footprint under various sizing operation scenarios. found that an effective battery capacity of 120–165 kWh (400–550 actual 30% depth discharge) solar 85–105 kW can effectively minimize all three objectives average daily demand 265 during period. Additionally, implementing alternative strategy lead 12% reduction in generation.
